This panel will discuss changes that are looming for the utility industry. For example, utilities are faced with the following challenges: 1) implementation of smart meters, 2) customers who generate their own electricity, 3) looming carbon prices, 4) rate cases nationwide to accommodate two-way flows of electricity, 5) increasing attention to national security and cybersecurity vulnerabilities of the grid, 6) natural gas abundance and what it means for utilities, 7) increasing pressure from stakeholders to clean up emissions, 8) competing pressure to keep total electric bills low, 9) widespread implementation of variable electricity sources such as wind and solar, and 10) challenges to financing for large capital-intensive projects. What are the technological, policy, and cultural approaches to solve these multi-pronged problems? What is the role for innovative, emerging companies to help solve these challenges? What is the role of traditional utilities?
